Day 1 (1.23.12): Today is the first day of my internship seminar and there are a few things that I already expect from it:
- That, at some point, I will probably cry and want to bang my head against the wall to concretely deal with my stress and my workload.
- That, at some point, I will probably be screaming furiously (internally, of course) in response to realizations of how messed up the world is in regards to work from my internship and the connections with the fabulous literature I will be reading in class.
- That, at some point, I will come out of my shell and be ‘the person I want to be’ because I will fully realize the extent to which feminism enables me to be that person.
- I will be disappointed when I discover my “perfect life, perfect job.”
- That I will be able to apply this class to the real world and take a lot from it in the end.
I am not very well-versed nor inclined politically and economically, except for when it comes to reproductive justice and in some respect, healthcare. However, I am very excited to apply an econo-politico-Occupy-movement-esque aspect to my work, especially since this will be my 4th semester as a Campus Action Intern and having participated in Occupy New Haven during one of our monthly trainings last semester, as well as spending some of the last moments of 2011 at Zuccotti Park occupying Wall Street before the ball dropped.
Regardless, I am excited to start working as an intern again and hosting events on campus. Yesterday, was the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the first project the interns and I have planned is a visibility event in front of the Student Union. Graves will be placed with women’s names who have died from illegal abortions, abortion facts, pro-feminist sayings, health statistics, etc. beginning Wednesday until Friday of this week (pictures coming soon). In addition, we will be filming The Coathanger Project in the Women’s Center next Tuesday evening (1/31) at 7pm, where we will hopefully have our clinic escort adviser from Hartford GYN not only attend, but give insight into the clinic escorting program and recruit some new faces. I, personally, wish we would also paint the rock in addition to our other events, as well as hold a mini-vigil, but the consensus is that we are “already doing enough.” I beg to disagree, but given time constraints and probably overall laziness, I am content with our current projects. I guess I need to stop being overly ambitious and learn to focus more. With that said, I’ll conclude this first post and begin reading Winner-Take-All Politics before bed get ready for bed.
I already know this is going to be a long, strenuous semester, but bring it on! :)
